What is Discord?
Discord is a text and voice chat application (similar to Microsoft Teams) it's a great place for your society members to chat, and has a lot of features that are great for running a society. Discord have made a great guide on how to set up a server which you can find here.
We recommend you add your society logo and name the server something along the lines of "HW [Society Name]" or "Heriot-Watt [Society Name]" to avoid confusion. Make sure you add enough moderators (most likely members of your commitee) so that you can keep on top of things, and try to create a space where everyone feels welcome and no unwanted behaviour is going on.
Once you've made your server be sure to let you members know by sending out an update email!
Heriot-Watt University Discord hub
Heriot-Watt has it's own Discord hub where you'll find loads of other societies, as well as courses and year groups! Make sure to add your society to the hub so that people can find you more easily! Also have a look and see how other societies run their Discord, they might have some great ideas you can pinch!
