What is MATES?

MATES is a brand new scheme where students can find others to attend society events with so that they know someone when they turn up. We've set this up to encourage new members to join different societies and try things that they might not otherwise, as well as get over that fear of turning up and not knowing anyone.

We're looking for ambassadors from societies to have a chat to new members before they join. You don't have to be on a society committee, you could just be a regular member who loves your society. As a thank you, you can earn volunteering hours for being a Mate!

One great thing to do is just to have a chat to your MATE before hand and attend a society event with them so they don't feel like they're going in cold.

As a Mate you should ALWAYS:

  • Respect each other and be polite
  • Respect Heriot-Watt values and be appropriate at all times
  • Let the MATES Administrators know if you are unhappy or have any issues with your Mate
  • Let the MATES Administrators know if you would like to leave the system; don’t just ignore your Mate!
  • Don’t overshare personal issues with your Mate; they are a fellow student and not an agony aunt! Instead, contact the Advice Hub or the Wellbeing Services.
  • If you are concerned about your Mate's wellbeing, don’t take it on yourself; instead, refer them to the Advice Hub or the Wellbeing Services.
  • Stay safe – if you meet your Mate in person, do it in a public, busy space
  • Have fun!
