Izzy Aitken

Student MP

Hi guys, I’m Izzy and am excited to say I’ll be a student Member of Parliament this year. I’m really looking forward to listening to any ideas or views you may have regarding student life!

There are 5 Student Members of Parliament and there is no set remit for any of these positions to work on throughout the year. We run on any issues we feel are important and need addressing, so the world is our oyster!

We stand for these positions based upon wanting to work on a particular issue of the student experience at Heriot-Watt that we see as important. This could be anything from wanting a 24-hour shop in the library to increasing the amount of street lighting around campus.

I'm supported by the Union Group most suited to the issue I raise. I also support the work of Parliament through proactively listening to, and working for students as well as planning activities that meet the needs of students and increases participation in what we do. I attend and contribute to Parliament Meetings, and take an active role in organising events or campaigns throughout the year, helping to implement motions and ideas that pass at Student Parliament.

I have been involved in various societies with committee positions in the Psychology Society, VegSoc and Drama Society. I like to keep busy so hope to continue with all of these going into my final year!

I feel it is imperative students are listened to on what can be changed or improved on campus and I’m confident that I can raise any issues you may have regarding societies, events or general student life. I am very approachable and will always take time to listen.

This year I'm hoping to work on assisting the Student Union and Societies with organising events, ensuring a wide online engagement to increase turnout. i'd like to get clear allergen labelling in all University food outlets and have more storage spaces for societies.

I'm most looking forward to organising events and supporting societies! My favourite part of University has been the societies I’ve been involved with. I’ve always felt very welcomed and want to ensure that all students feel the same.

I can ring church bells and have rang a quarter peal (45 minutes of ringing) on a bell weighing 400kgs.

If you want to chat about my role, or something you think we should be looking at, then here's how you can find me:
