Let's say hello to...

Libby, Marketing Assistant

A Reel-y Creative Mind

Hello! I’m Libby, Marketing Assistant at HWUnion. I’m originally from Callander, a small town in the countryside, and moved to Edinburgh for university. After spending my whole life somewhere small, I thought it was time for a change. I love Edinburgh because there’s always something to do, but I also love that Heriot-Watt’s campus sits outside the city centre. It gives you that lovely sense of community while still having the city right on your doorstep.

I’ve been at the Union for three months, and it’s my first job outside hospitality! I do miss making coffee sometimes, although I’ve had my fair share of unusual orders. The most bizarre was a four-shot decaf coffee, a cup of hot water and an empty cup. The customer called it a “deconstructed Americano”.

When I saw the job advert for Marketing Assistant, I thought it was a great opportunity to combine my love of social media and creativity. Now, I spend my time coming up with ideas, filming, editing content, and finding ways to show off what student life is really like.

One thing I’m particularly proud of is interviewing staff members, including the CEO, to help introduce more staff content. I was quite nervous at first, but it went really well. I also loved seeing new students make friends during WOW Week. You don’t always see how much work goes into creating those moments, so watching everything come together makes it worthwhile.

The Union value I connect with most is Fun. Marketing gives me the chance to be creative and try new ideas. For me, the best part is seeing the finished result after we put so much work into it.

Outside work, swimming has always been a big part of my life. I started as a kid going swimming with my dad, and it’s something I’ve loved ever since. I’m also a big reader, especially when it comes to rom-coms. I have a habit of rereading The Selection series every couple of years. I recently loved The Women, particularly because I’ve travelled to Vietnam myself. Speaking of travel, Vietnam, Amsterdam and Malaysia are all places I’ve loved exploring.

And finally, I’ve always been obsessed with pugs. Growing up, I was the girl with all the pug merchandise, and that hasn’t entirely changed. I still have a pug mug in my flat, so I suppose some things never go out of style!
