Keeping the Ball Rolling
Hello! I’m Chris, Sports Union President and Student Executive. I’m originally from Inverness but came to Heriot-Watt in 2020 following a bit of a family tradition as my whole family went here too. I graduated this year with a degree in Business and Finance, although it felt a little strange doing my own graduation speech, I loved being able to do that.
Sport has always been a huge part of my life and was actually how I got involved at university. I started with the Football Club and gradually became more involved through committees and the Ambassador Programme, which eventually led me to the student elections. After an injury, I focused more on the coaching side and we went on to win the league last year but who knows, I might even make a return to playing this year.
I wanted to become Sports Union President because I wanted to see more of what happens behind the scenes. As a student, you don’t always see how decisions are made or how much work goes into creating change, so I wanted to be part of that process and help make an impact.
I’m passionate about making sport more accessible. If I could change one thing in a heartbeat, it would be the cost. Prices keep going up, and it can be difficult for students to justify spending money and time on sport when they’re also working, studying and trying to pay their bills. I want to make sure more students can experience everything that sport has to offer.
What motivates me is seeing how passionate people are about sport. The dedication of our clubs and ambassadors is incredible, and being around that passion brings a real sense of discipline and community.
The Union values I connect with most are Welcoming and Fun. I just love having fun. There’s no point doing something if you can’t enjoy it, But fun equally means making sure everyone has a place in it.
Outside of the Union, football is still a pretty big part of my life. I support Inverness, so I love going to games and probably talk about football a little too much. And for a random fact? I’m left-footed but right-handed, so I suppose I like to mix things up.
