Let's say hello to...
Hooked on Yarns & Good Yaps
Hello! I'm Ellie, Student Engagement Assistant, and I'm currently in my third year studying Marketing at Heriot-Watt. I'm originally from England, but moved to Scotland when I was six because my dad decided to swap his army career for something a little different and start a candle business! We've moved around quite a lot over the years, probably lived in about 15 different houses, but eventually settled in Kinross.
I chose Heriot-Watt partly because of the support available for neurodivergent students. As an autistic person, that was really important to me, and it's something I've appreciated throughout my time here. I also love Edinburgh. It's a lovely city especially because you get to experience all four seasons, it’s beautiful.
I've been working at the Union since September. I used to volunteer here, and everyone always seemed to be smiling, so it felt like somewhere I wanted to be. My role involves a bit of everything, from supporting societies and organising events to speaking with students and bringing people together. As a society leader myself, I understand some of the things that can be tricky, so I really enjoy being able to help make those things easier for others.
One of the things I am proudest of is starting the Crochet and Knit Society last year. I started it simply because I loved crocheting but I never expected it to grow to more than 100 members! We even won Society of the Year last year. It's been so lovely meeting people through something creative and seeing everyone bring their own creativity along.
The Union value closest to my heart is welcoming. As an autistic student, I know how important it is to feel comfortable being yourself. I try to make sure people don't feel they have to act a certain way or fit into a particular idea of what a student should be. I think treating people equally sometimes means treating them differently, because everyone needs something different to feel included.
Outside work, I obviously love crocheting, my cat and travelling. Paris is one of my favourite places, and I've been five times! I'm also a massive Miffy fan. I have around 30 little Miffy teddies, mugs, and plenty of other merch! I even have a tattoo of my Miffy teddy. So I think it's fair to say it’s becoming a bit of a problem!
