Making the Leap
Hello! I’m Freya, a Student Executive here at HW and a Psychology student with a big interest in forensic psychology. I’ve always been fascinated by people and what shapes the choices they make. My uncle works in the police and he inspired me to become interested in understanding the "why" behind offending. That curiosity eventually led me to psychology, and hopefully one day to working with young offenders.
I’m from Edinburgh and decided to stay close to home for university. Family was a big factor, but Heriot-Watt quickly won me over in its own right. The campus has such a welcoming feel, and honestly, the alpacas sealed the deal. Once they arrived on campus, I knew I wasn’t going anywhere.
I have always been involved with the Union because I’ve always had plenty to say and a strong desire to make things better. Before becoming a Student Executive, I was a Class Rep, a Department Officer, and involved in campaigns through the Palestine Society. I care deeply about representation, whether that’s ensuring LGBTQ+ students feel heard, pushing for ethical practices, or making sure important conversations don’t lose momentum halfway through. For me, Student Exec is where those conversations can turn into action.
I like to think of Student Exec as a student-powered parliament. We work to bring forward student concerns and have the opportunity to make meaningful change across campus. One thing I’m particularly excited about is promoting active wellbeing. I’d love to see stronger links between the Sports Union and the Student Union because wellbeing looks different for everyone, and being active can play a huge role in helping people thrive.
The Union value that resonates with me most is Empowering. I feel very empowered in myself, my beliefs, and choices and I want to help other people realise they can do the same.
Outside of university, my hobbies are a bit of a mix. I’m a concert lover, photography enthusiast, Pokémon card collector (my collection is sitting at 300 and counting!). I love all things witchy and am a tarot card reader. I am also the proud owner of a hamster called Splodge.
And here’s a quirky fact: while I’m terrified of heights, I once jumped off a cliff into the sea on a school trip. I spent the whole time shaking with fear, then immediately wanted to do it again.
