What is Student Exec?

Student exec is your Union’s political decision-making body. Executives make decisions on Student Union policy, affiliations, and overall direction. They also approve the Union’s priority campaigns for the year.

90% of Exec members have to agree on a decision before it becomes the Union’s official position – that's a high bar! If 90% isn’t reached the matter will go out to you as an all-student-vote also known as student referendum.

You also have the power to call an all-student vote if you disagree with a decision made by exec. How? Simply by getting in touch with us.

Accountability

Your elected Full-Time Officers represent you by working to improve your student experience in various ways, but they are also accountable to you meaning that you actually get to have your say about what they do and how they do it. For example, are they making any progress? Are they acting according to their original manifesto? You tell us!

What is the panel?

The accountability panel takes a friendly and firm approach to assess the FTOs work and priorities.

The Panel only meets a few times each year to make sure the officers are on track and it is made up of engaged student volunteers as well as an FTO from a different student union to bring impartiality and objectiveness to the table.

So What does the panel do?

  • Review FTO progress
  • Ask supportive but challenging questions
  • Give feedback

The panel starts by asking each FTO questions based on their accountability reports, the panel will also provide feedback based on whether they think the FTOs are focussing on the issues that truly matter most to students.

The FTO will then leave the room and the panel will work together to conclude three strengths and three areas of development for the FTO.

Between panels, the FTOs will work on their development areas and update on their progress at the following panel.

You can read the questions asked and the strengths and development areas below in the minutes.
