Let's say hello to...
Celebrating the Fun, Supporting the Foundations.
Hi, I’m Paul, one of the Trustees at Heriot-Watt Student Union. Though I officially retired from my role as HW Academic Registrar in 2023, I’ve been closely connected to the Union for over 8 years, first as a university-appointed Trustee, and now as an independent member of the Board. I’ve lived in many parts of the UK but moved to Edinburgh back in 2000, and no matter where work took me after that, I always knew I’d return here. Edinburgh is one of those places that feels alive with possibility, especially for students. It’s a small capital city with a big heart and an unmatched cultural scene.
My journey with the Union started through my role at the University, acting as a bridge between the institution and the Trustee Board. When I retired, I knew I wanted to stay involved. The Union does incredible work supporting students, creating an empowering environment where people can grow, lead, and thrive. Being a Trustee is about keeping that support going strong behind the scenes helping guide decisions, making sure everything runs smoothly and legally, and ultimately ensuring the Union is set up to keep thriving for another 60 years and beyond.
One piece of work I’m especially proud of is collaborating on the Union’s pay reward policy, making sure staff are recognised and paid fairly. That change has already made a difference in helping recruit and retain talented people.
But the part that sticks with me most are the annual awards. Every year I’m blown away by the dedication, creativity, and heart students put into their societies and volunteering. The awards are more than just a ceremony. It’s easy to think all that would happen anyway, but without spaces for recognition and celebration, the experience wouldn’t be the same. They’re everything the Union stands for, and for that reason I’d say the value I resonate most with is fun as it makes this place feel so special.
Outside of my Trustee role, I keep myself busy with aqua aerobics, I’m a proud member of the Children’s Panel for Scotland, and I love nothing more than a spontaneous day trip around the country. Oh, and back in 2000, I was named Hospital Radio Presenter of the Year, which still makes me smile. I may not be on the mic anymore, but I’m still quietly championing voices that matter!
