Let's say hello to...
Being Brave to Make Change
Hi, I’m Cameron, and I’m your Student Union President. I’ve been in the role for a year now, and if I had to sum it up, I’d say it’s a bit like being a lobbyist for student issues. I represent our student community on campus, in meetings with the University, and with local and national government. My job is to make sure students have the best opportunities and that our voices are heard.
I’m originally from Ireland, but I came to Heriot-Watt five years ago to study and I never left. I love Edinburgh, the people. I’ve always had a passion for helping others, and that really shaped my time as a student. I started out leading a society, then became a Student Executive, and eventually ran for President. It felt like the natural next step for me, a chance to give back and to push for real change.
No two days in this job are ever the same. One day I might be in back-to-back meetings with University committees talking policy and curriculum, and the next I’m meeting with MPs and councillors about issues affecting students in Edinburgh and the Borders. Though the best part of the job is when I get a few minutes between meetings to actually talk to students.
One of the things I’m most proud of is our work on the housing campaign. We’ve brought together student unions from across Scotland to push for better, fairer housing. It’s already had traction with MPs and government, and I think it’s going to lead to something big for students.
Brave is the Union value that resonates most with me. There have been so many times in this role when I’ve had to step out of my comfort zone. It’s uncomfortable, yes, but it’s also where the most important growth happens. You can’t make a difference without taking a few risks along the way.
Outside of work, I’m pretty chill, I like reading, and getting completely immersed in TV shows with expanded universes, Star Wars: Andor is a current favourite (I’ve already rewatched it). A fun fact? I took a gap year before uni to work and save up for travelling… but then COVID hit and I ended up working the whole year instead. If anyone’s offering free flights now though, I’m off to Cuba without hesitation.
