Let's say hello to...

Thomas, Duty Manager

Pulling Pints and Spinning Vinyl.

Hi, I’m Thomas, Duty Manager at Heriot-Watt Student Union. You’ll usually find me buzzing around Geordies, Libertys or Zeros, making sure everything runs smoothly. Whether it’s pouring the perfect pint, sorting stock, or trying to impress with a bit of latte art, I’m here to help create the best experience possible for everyone who walks through our doors.

I was born and bred in Edinburgh, and honestly, I can’t imagine being anywhere else. I’ve made a lot of memories here, there’s so much to love about this city, from the amazing transport links to the culture and social buzz. It’s got the perfect mix of Scottish charm and city life.

Before joining the team, I’d spent years working in pubs and bars. One of my favourite jobs was in a student pub, I loved the energy. So, when this opportunity came up, I knew it was the right fit. The Union gives me the challenge I was looking for and the chance to grow into a role I can really be proud of.

My day-to-day can vary a lot, but I’m mostly based in Geordies, prepping and planning. It’s busy, but I thrive on that kind of atmosphere. I get to be around people, keep things flowing, and work with a team I’m genuinely proud of. I’m a people person through and through. I like having a chat, making people feel welcome, and just generally having a bit of fun while doing a good job. That’s why the Union values that resonate with me the most are fun and welcoming. When you combine the two, you create a vibe that people remember. It makes a difference, whether you’re a fresher walking into the bar for the first time or a regular coming in after a long day.

Outside of work, I’ve got a few passions. I love football (I am a Hearts through and through!), playing darts, and heading out on walks around the city or out to places like Glencoe. I’m also really into travelling. I went to Germany for the Euros, and I’d go back in a second. And if we’re talking quirky facts... I’ve got a massive vinyl collection. Arctic Monkeys are up there as favourites, but I’ve got loads from the ’80s and ’90s too. It’s a bit of a treasure trove.
