Let's say hello to...
Giving Gala a Voice, One Connection at a Time
Hi, I’m Joey, your Gala Intern! I split my time between Dunfermline, Edinburgh, Glasgow, and our beautiful Scottish Borders Campus, where I’m heading into my final year studying fashion. I love the course, especially the sustainability angle. Creating with purpose just makes sense to me.
I joined the Union just before Freshers last year because the way they welcomed me as a fresher really stuck with me. Even though I was nervous about the role, I ended up surprising myself as I felt the more, I talked, the more confident I felt.
Being the Gala Intern means a lot to me. SBC has its own life, it’s smaller, more intimate, and thriving with potential. I know that first community interaction can shape your whole university experience. That’s what happened to me. So, I want to help students find their voice, build confidence, and feel part of something. Whether it’s running events, supporting academic congress, or just checking in with people, no two days are the same and that’s what I love.
Recently, a student messaged to thank me for supporting them through their first year. It made me really proud. It felt like hearing from a younger version of myself. I remember arriving at uni feeling overwhelmed and scared but then I started putting myself out there more. I used to be really shy, but working with the Union helped me find my confidence and become someone who’s not afraid to speak up.
That’s why the Union value that resonates most with me is brave. Gala’s a small campus, it’s easy to stay keep your head down. Though it takes bravery to show up to your first society meeting, put yourself forward as a class rep, or chase a new opportunity. I know, because I’ve done it, and it’s changed my life.
Outside of work, I’m all about sustainable fashion. I’ve just started interning with a designer in Glasgow, and it’s been a brilliant learning experience. I also play guitar, love a bit of Mario Kart, and will never pass up a good charity shop haul especially in the Borders (surprise, surprise!).
Fun fact? I met my industry mentor at a networking event I was terrified to attend. Now I work with him. Go figure. Sometimes you really need to be brave!
