Let's say hello to...

Rachel, First Contact Team

Helping students find their rhythm when things fall out of step.

Hello, I’m Rachel, part of the First Contact team at the Advice Hub here at Heriot-Watt Student Union. Originally from Hertfordshire, I came to Scotland in 1995 to study photography, film, and television. Although I didn’t finish my degree, I met my partner, started a family, and built a life here. Edinburgh is a great city to be in, it feels less overwhelming compared to other cities, it’s like you’re kind of in a bubble. Then Heriot-Watt has got such a beautiful campus with lots to offer space-wise.

My journey’s been anything but linear, working in property and facilities’ management, becoming a full-time mum, and later homeschooling during lockdown. That’s when I realised how much I value connection, which led me to volunteer with Parentline Scotland and eventually, to this role at the Union.

Even though I’ve only just started, it already feels like a full-circle moment. I often think that if I’d had access to something like the Advice Hub back in the day, my own student experience might have looked very different. Now, I get to be that helping hand for someone else.

So, what’s my job like? I’m here to listen, guide, and shine a light when things feel overwhelming. Whether it’s helping students find the information they need or pointing them in the right direction, it’s all about navigating the steps and connecting with honesty. The world can be a scary place, to have people that have that integrity and are genuinely democratic, it’s a starting point.

I’m still learning the ropes, but I’ve already been struck by how open, transparent, and student-focused the Union is. People are working together and there’s room for everybody’s voices to be heard. It’s an empowering place to be, and that’s the value that speaks to me most: empowering. Supporting students to take control of their journey and give them the tools to move forward.

Outside of work, life revolves around my kids, I am always running around between activities. I’m happiest when there’s music playing. Kitchen discos are my go-to stress relief, and if you mention Zumba or Gorillaz, I’m in.

A fun fact? I am a proper dance mum and I’ve taken part in a parents’ dance competition in front of 500 people (no pressure!)
