Let's say hello to...
Keeping the Union spotless with a smile and a blether.
I’m Lorraine, or as I like to call myself, a Domestic Engineer, it sounds fun, and people always ask me, “What’s that?”. Well, I sweep, wash, and support the team however I can. My role definitely goes beyond just cleaning, which is why the posh title fits perfectly!
I’m from East Calder now, but I grew up in Balerno and thought I’d stay there forever. Life had other plans! East Calder is great, the best shops, plenty of places to eat, and if you ask me, Wagamama is a solid choice anytime. I’ve been part of the Heriot-Watt Student Union family for nine years now, and it’s been a brilliant journey.
What do I enjoy about my job? It might sound simple, but it really does make a difference, especially during busy times like Freshers, when the place goes wild, and we get everything back shipshape for the next day. Before joining the Union full-time, I was a cleaner at a primary school and took on this role to fill my mornings. After a while, I realised how much I loved it here so I left the school job and made the Union my full-time home.
One of the things I’m most proud of is how the team helps each other, especially when there are big events. Brenda and I have our own little projects and, honestly, part of the reason I come to work is for the blether and the camaraderie but don’t tell her I said that!
What keeps me motivated? I want the Union to be a great place where students can come to relax and enjoy themselves. Cleaning might not sound glamorous, but it changes how the building feels and is used. For that reason, the Union’s value that speaks to me most is Student-Focused. I love meeting students from other countries, it’s like the world comes to me here because I don’t travel abroad much myself!
Outside of work, I’m passionate about gardening and going on walks with Cooper, my daughter’s dog. He’s a clever boy and great company. I also have a soft spot for cabins with hot tubs, sounds like a treat, doesn’t it?
And a fun fact? I’d love to go skydiving someday, though I’m not sure I’d have the nerve to jump out of a plane just yet!
