Let's say hello to...
Brewing Bravery, Baking Belonging
Hi, I’m Lizzie, the Advice Hub Manager here at Heriot-Watt Student Union. I’m still pretty new but it already feels like I’ve landed somewhere special. You know that rare feeling when people actually live by the values they talk about? That’s what I’ve found here.
I’m originally from Northern Ireland but studied in Scotland years ago. I’d always hoped to move back, and when my partner got a job in Edinburgh, it felt like the perfect opportunity. We arrived in the middle of January, cold but excited, and now that it’s summer, I’m finally starting to feel properly settled in.
Before joining the Union, I’ve done a bit of everything, from barista to my most recent adventure working for a charity that used literature to help people slow down and reflect on their emotions. All those experiences had one thing in common: creating space for people to unwind without filters. That’s what drew me to this job. I’m endlessly curious about people’s stories. My role is all about making sure students have a non-judgemental place to turn to, whether they’re facing academic challenges, financial worries, or life’s curveballs. I want students to feel brave enough to be themselves and know they’re not alone.
Day to day, no two moments are the same. Some days it’s meeting with students, listening to what’s on their minds and offering advice; other days it’s working with colleagues to ensure we’re spotting issues before they become crises. I love the idea that by sharing knowledge and listening deeply, we can build a student experience that supports the whole person.
The Union value that resonates most with me is brave. I think it takes real courage to be vulnerable and talk about the things that are hard. Bravery doesn’t always look the same, sometimes it’s speaking up, sometimes it’s just showing up, and I love seeing all the different ways people are brave in their own lives.
Outside of work, I’m very crafty knitting, sewing, and making my own clothes. I love baking too, you can’t beat a classic chocolate chip cookie, although I did make a miso and dark chocolate batch once that turned out surprisingly delicious. Edinburgh’s nature spots have been amazing to explore so far, and if you’re ever in need of a latte, I’ve got a silver barista certificate!
