Let's say hello to...

Emily, Student Engagement Coordinator (Communities)

Helping You Feel at Home, Away from Home

Hi, I’m Emily, the Student Engagement Coordinator for Communities. I’ve only just joined the Union, but already I can tell this is going to be a role full of energy and ideas. My job is all about helping students find their place at Heriot-Watt, whether that’s through joining a society, getting stuck into volunteering, or simply finding like-minded people who help make this big new world feel a little friendlier.

I’ve moved around a lot myself, so I know how important it is to feel welcomed when you’re starting fresh. I was born in Kent, spent part of my childhood growing up in Athens, and later moved back to the UK. Around 10 years ago, I headed north to Glasgow for what was meant to be a short three-month contract working in television… and ended up staying nearly a decade because I just fell in love with the people and the beauty of Scotland.

Before this role, I spent my career in science TV production, working with the BBC and filming in different places. It was a fast-paced, exciting job, but over time I realised what I loved most was connecting people to stories that made them feel something. That’s what drew me to student engagement: helping people find joy, belonging, and meaning in their day-to-day lives.

Right now, I’m busy getting to know the amazing societies here and finding ways to help them grow. I’ll also be looking after volunteering opportunities, supporting our brilliant student interns, and helping shape big events like Freshers Week and the annual awards. I love the idea of creating a little microcosm of the world here on campus, a place where different cultures, languages, and experiences can come together.

The Union value that means the most to me is welcoming. I know what it’s like to be the new person walking into a room and not knowing anyone. So, I want every student to feel welcomed with kindness when they arrive here.

Outside of work, I’m a bit of a travel addict (I’m always planning big trips, Japan is next on the list!) I also love cooking, baking, and recently have been making birthday cards from shells I collect on Scottish beaches.

Fun fact? My laugh is pretty distinctive; I’m one of those people who laughs so hard I cry.
