Let's say hello to...

Ellen, Marketing Intern

From Awards Night to Dropping the Mic

Hey, I’m Ellen, the Union’s Marketing Intern and resident Swiftie. I joined in semester two and just couldn’t leave, so here I am for the summer too.

I’m originally from Fife, but Edinburgh has always had a pull for me probably because I spent so much time here growing up. There’s something about the city that feels like home. Plus, the endless stream of cafés is a big pull (I reckon you could try a new one every day!).

Day to day, I work closely with Angela, our Marketing Coordinator, and it’s been brilliant to apply what I’m learning in my MSc Digital Marketing course to real-world projects. I’m the go-to for all things marketing support like scheduling social media, newsletters, making graphics for events, and recently diving into web content.

Before Heriot-Watt, I did my undergrad in Product Design. It wasn’t until my final year that I discovered how much I loved marketing, especially the content creation side. I’ve always been drawn to visuals, I used to dream of working for magazines, but now I’m chasing a career in social media instead.

One of the best experiences I’ve had at the Union was working on our Awards Night content. I didn’t think I’d be brave enough to stand in front of a camera, let alone enjoy it but I absolutely loved it! The buzz, the teamwork, it reminded me how far I’ve come. When I first started, the team was in a bit of a transition and Jamie told me to just have faith in my work. That stuck with me. Now I try to pay it forward by helping others feel confident in themselves too.

The Union value that resonates most with me is empowering. Whether I’m filming a student story or designing graphics for a campaign, I always think about how we can help students like me find their voice.

Outside of work, I’m big on trying new recipes and treasure-hunting in charity shops. I’m always on the lookout for quirky bits like candle holders and ceramics. My favourite find so far is an old western-style jug I’ve turned into a vase.

And here’s my party trick: at every family gathering, I grab my mic and perform All Too Well, yes, the ten-minute version. And just when everyone thinks it’s over… Love Story kicks in. You’re welcome.
