Let's say hello to...

Brenda, Domestic Engineer

More than cleaning, making the Union feel like home.

Hello, I’m Brenda, though I was hired as a cleaner, I like to call myself a Domestic Engineer because we do so much more than just cleaning, and well, it sounds a bit fancier! I’m originally from Livingston, but I moved to Edinburgh to stay with my sister, and I’ve now been part of the Union family for eight years.

If you’re wondering what I do, I keep the Union tidy by cleaning, painting, wallpapering, and lending a hand wherever needed. I absolutely love it! One of the best parts of my day is letting people in each morning and greeting everyone. Plus, I’ve got my partner in crime, Lorraine we’re the two cleaners here and honestly, I can’t imagine this job without her.

Before I joined the Union, I worked in a care home, but I wanted a change. When this job came up, it just felt right. Then I interviewed and the people were lovely. Sometimes you just get that good feeling about a place, and this is it.

My days are never the same, I’m always running around mopping, tidying up Liberty and Geordies. But it’s more than that, anything that needs doing, I’m involved. One project I’m really proud of was painting around the building. It was such a satisfying job, especially turning the grey handrails into a bright pop of our Union blue and it’s still looking great years later!

What keeps me motivated? Lorraine, without a doubt. She’s brilliant at lifting spirits, especially on those freezing cold mornings. She’ll say “I’m roasting,” and we’ll have a laugh. It’s that friendship and fun that make all the difference. Everyone here is fantastic, and the team spirit is real.

If I had to pick a Union value that speaks to me most, it’s definitely welcoming. We make sure everyone who walks through our doors feels at home and since I’m the one physically opening those doors, that means a lot.

Outside work, my world revolves around my family especially my seven wonderful grandkids! We’re always off to the zoo, parks, shopping trips, or just out for walks. They keep me busy and bring so much joy.

And here’s a quirky little thing about us. Every morning, Lorraine makes us a cup of tea and a sandwich. It’s our little ritual and catch-up moment.
