We are a society that strives to protect our oceans!
A relatively new society that started up in May 2021, passionate about conserving and advocating for our oceans. The Ocean Conservation Society (OCS) hosts monthly beach cleans, currently held on the last Sunday of each month. We also organise a variety of events such as fossil hunts with our fossil expert Holly, beach bonfire and bbq nights, marine mammal and bird watching, rockpooling events, marine pub quizes, and nights out for a wee boogy too!
The OCS has a knack for collaborating with other societies and clubs at HWU to spread ocean awareness, but also Edinburgh uni societies, and external organisiations like the British Divers Mairne Life Rescue (BDMLR), the Marine Conservation Society (MCS), and Surfers Against Sewage, that we often work together with to help save the seas.
Last year in our first year as a society, we were very honoured to have been awarded the "new society of the year award" and this year we're stepping up our game even further, hoping to host weekly socials/events for our members, raise money for ocean charities, and even provide marine-related opportunities and experiences for anyone that desires.
Our committee this year is a beautifully diverse group of ocean and environmental nerds (plus our dancing shark mascot) that are all here to welcome new and old members alike with open jaws... I mean arms.. Very excited to see how this academic year pans out and for yall to join us on some sick ocean adventures.
