This is a part time job, primarily evening and weekend work as required. Usual hours will be term-time only.  Flexibility is expected depending on what we have going on.

Who are we?

We are Heriot-Watt University Student Union. We’re based at Riccarton and our main goal is to make sure that Heriot-Watt students have THE BEST TIME whilst studying here. As well as the bar, we have a café, nightclub and shop, plus we work with students to make their time at Heriot-Watt the best it can be.

You’ll join a friendly, hardworking and professional team and have a real opportunity to make a difference to our front of house operations.

What do you get?

You will be paid £10.42 an hour, plus holiday pay, gain invaluable bar training, get to join in on all the Union’s biggest events and have that warm fuzzy feeling when you know you’re helping your fellow students make the most of their time at Heriot-Watt.

Typical day on the job

  • As you arrive, you notice that a few tables are needing to be cleared, so you sort them out and clean the table first.
  • A customer walks in looking for Libertys, you direct and give them instructions on where to go and ask if there is anything else they need.
  • Later, a student comes to you asking to book the bar for a society event they wish to host, you put them in contact with Daniel, who can help them out or if he is unavailable, you give them his email address to contact.
  • You continue your day by taking orders, serving drinks, and putting in food orders for customers. Alongside, supporting your other colleagues if they are needing help and aiding customers to support any needs they may have.
  • Geordies has got a bit quieter, so you use your initiative and complete weekly cleaning that is needing done, such as cleaning fridges, etc.
  • A customer orders a pint, but you notice the keg is out, so you ask the customer to take a seat and you will bring the pint over once you have changed the keg.
  • The kitchen is quite busy so you make sure to tell any customers that there might be a slight delay on food, but you will get their drinks straight away. Ensure that customers are communicated to!
  • At the end of the day, you make sure everything is put away and is ready to start for the following day. This includes cleaning down all tables and chairs, ensuring that all workplaces have been cleaned, such as the bar area and bathrooms. As well as cleaning the floors.
