Details

We are looking for energetic students to join our team of catering staff. You will work as part of a close team to feed the hungry students in the Union’s eating outlets, providing outstanding customer service and making sure your kitchen is the cleanest in Edinburgh.

This is a part time job, primarily evening and weekend work as required. Usual hours will be term-time only.  Flexibility is expected depending on what we have going on.

Who are we?

We are Heriot-Watt University Student Union. We’re based at Riccarton and our main goal is to make sure that Heriot-Watt students have THE BEST TIME whilst studying here. As well as the bar, we have a café, nightclub and shop, plus we work with students to make their time at Heriot-Watt the best it can be.

You’ll join a friendly, hardworking and professional team and have a real opportunity to make a difference to the food our students eat.

What do you get?

You will be paid £9.50 an hour, plus holiday pay, gain invaluable catering experience and have that warm fuzzy feeling when you know you’re helping your fellow students make the most of their time at Heriot-Watt.

What would a shift look like?

  • You begin your shift and see that some dishes are needing washed from the afternoon rush, so you wash them and put them away.
  • Moving forward, you notice that some of the food prep is running low and needs to be caught up, so you wash your hands and prep what is needing done. Afterwards, you label the food and put it away correctly.
  • You now come out front and see some confused customers. You ask them if you could help them, and it turns out they are looking for somewhere to eat lunch. You suggest the different options available and direct them to a table and say how to view the menu and put in their order.
  • Now that you have come back, you notice that there are orders starting to come through, so you get started on cooking and plating them – ensuring you follow the cook and presentation standard we have in place, then take them to the customer's table.
  • As well as this, you check on other customers to make sure they are satisfied with their order and if there is anything you can do for them.
  • As the day begins to come to an end, you clear more tables and continue to make sure the kitchen is kept clean.
  • Now that the kitchen is closed, you check all the dishes have been brought through and begin going through the end of day cleaning schedule, making sure the kitchen is clean to a high standard and is ready for the next morning. In addition, you pass on any relevant information from the day to the Duty Manager e.g. if we are running low on anything specifically or if there have been any accidents and make sure records have been updated.

Our Teams can all demonstrate our values...

  • Keep your arms open wide to include everyone, regardless of background, culture or experience by being welcoming
  • Be brave and take a few risks to push yourself out of your comfort zone
  • Don’t just fix problems, but be empowering to help others to help themselves
  • Enjoy every minute of work by making sure you have fun
  • Make sure you are student focused in everything you do
