Details

What’s the job?

We’re looking for an enthusiastic student to join us for the Summer to help us work on increasing awareness and engagement in what the Student Union does. While the role will also be active in monitoring our social media, writing blogs and news articles, and supporting our plans for the year ahead, your main project for the Summer is to create a video and photo library we can use in our marketing. In particular, this will involve:

  • Storyboarding, scripting, filming, and editing promotional videos, explaining what HWUnion is/does
  • Planning, photographing, tweaking, and categorising photos, showing off our spaces and services

We're really looking for someone studying a media / digital marketing/marketing & communications degree, not necessarily from Heriot-Watt, that has skills in all things video production and/or photography. We imagine you'll have a keen eye for detail, a generous dose of creative flair, and the skills to take an idea through to a finished product.

The job is part-time – 20 hours per week. There might be the possibility of some remote working, however, given the need to film / photo we expect the need to spend a considerable amount of time in our office on the Riccarton campus. We would like a minimum of 3 days working per week.

Who are we?

We are Heriot-Watt University Student Union. We’re based in Edinburgh and our main goal is to make sure that Heriot-Watt students have THE BEST TIME whilst studying here. We have our commercial outlets as well as Advice Hub, academic representation, societies, and community, plus we work with students to make their time at Heriot-Watt the best it can be.

Marketing and Communications are key priorities for us at the moment, and year after year we are seeing growth in our engagement scores. We are keen to continue our past work – whilst hopefully bringing in new ideas.

What do you get?

The role pays £11.44 per hour plus holiday pay. You will be fully supported by the existing Marketing and Communications Coordinator and you’ll be involved in helping to shape our strategy going forward.

You will also gain invaluable experience in assisting with marketing campaigns from concept to delivery.

What would a typical day look like?

You arrive at the office, and after getting settled you log straight into our socials to check for messages (which you reply to) and pass on any interesting comments we've received to the Marketing & Comms Coordinator.

You have a couple of posts to create and schedule for Instagram. Using Photoshop and Illustrator you create the visuals, then write the copy and schedule using Meta Business Suite.

You had a really interesting meeting with the Full Time Officers yesterday about the 2-minute promotional video you're putting together - specifically aimed at prospective students at Open Days. You're taking their suggestions and tweaking your storyboard for the video, ready to present it to the Deputy CEO and Marketing & Comms Coordinator later today. If it gets signed off, then you can start writing the script and scheduling people in for filming.

Our cafe is launching a new afternoon tea concept, and the Head of Commercial Development has got the team to prepare various cakes and drinks for you to take photos of for the promotional materials. You head through and lay out your frame, make sure the lighting is just right, and then get snapping. The M&C Coordinator will add them to the graphics they've been working on.

A quick meeting with the DCEO and M&C Coordinator - they love your ideas for the video, and give you the go-ahead to start the next steps. It's only 9 weeks until Freshers Week so every day will count to make sure it's done in time!
The day is over - time to put your feet up ready for whatever tomorrow brings!
