What’s the job?

We’re looking for an enthusiastic student to join our Marketing Team until summer 2024 to help us create exciting and engaging content that showcases what we (the Student Union) and our groups do.

A lot of the role will be around attending events and activities to take photographs, record videos and speak to students, in order to create a range of content from reels on Instagram, to news articles on our website. We're looking for someone with a keen eye for a good photo and excellent writing skills. While we don't necessarily require experience, it usually helps you stand out if you can talk about any sort of previous examples of marketing work your've completed.

You will also assist in updating our website, creating and delivering marketing campaigns and reviewing and reporting back on insights to help other departments shape what they do.

Finally, you will assist in monitoring our social channels and replying to our members where appropriate.

Engaging with our members (that's any HW student at a UK campus) can be tricky, which is why this role is ideal for a current Heriot-Watt student.

The job is part-time – 10 hours per week (we will try to work around your studies, but you should expect hours to be split over several days). Ability to attend activities in person is essential, but some working from home may be possible when preparing and writing content. Flexibility each week will be needed depending on what activities are taking place (which might mean some evening and weekend work).

Who are we?

We are Heriot-Watt University Student Union. We’re based in Edinburgh and our main goal is to make sure that Heriot-Watt students have THE BEST TIME whilst studying here. We have our commercial outlets as well as Advice Hub, academic representation, societies and community, plus we work with Students to make their time at Heriot-Watt the best it can be.

Marketing and Communications are key priorities for us at the moment, and year on year we are seeing growth in our engagement scores. We are keen to continue our past work – whilst hopefully bringing in new ideas.

What would the average week look like?

  • Monday - you schedule a couple of hours in the office to work with the Marketing Comms Coordinator to discuss the week ahead. While in the office you schedule a couple of social media posts and reply to some student enquiries, directing them to the relevant person.
  • Tuesday - today the Class Reps are meeting for training, so you arrive at the start to get some photos and speak to the organisers for some background. Later, when you get home, you spend an hour editing the photos you took and writing some copy for a news article. This article will be linked in the next Student Newsletter, so you also create the relevant thumbnail images needed for the email so they're ready to go.
  • Wednesday - there's a pool tournament happening this evening, so you swing by to get photos and videos of people taking part. You speak to the organiser and get them to email you the winner when the tournament finishes, along with a quote you can use in the write up
  • Thursday - you write up the pool tournament review and publish it to the website. The Marketing Communications Coordinator will be adding it to a social media post next week
  • Friday - the bar is launching a new menu, and today they are cooking all the new items for staff to try. You come along (and enjoy the free food!) but also take some great photos that will be used as part of the launch campaign. You still have an hour of work left for the week, so you help the Marketing Comms Coordinator by writing social media post ready for next week using your photos and some catchy copy to let students know of the new options.

What do you get?

The role pays £10.42 per hour plus holiday pay. You will be fully supported by the existing marketing and communications team and you’ll be involved in helping to shape our strategy going forward.

You will also gain invaluable experience of assisting with marketing campaigns from concept to delivery.
