Welcome!

We are beyond excited to have you here at Heriot-Watt this year. Your full-time officers at the Student Union, Emily, Frankie, Hannah and Shana are here to make sure that you experience the most amazing and supported first year – and this year is going to be especially special!

They are past Heriot-Watt students who have lived through Covid-19 learning, and are now working to ensure that you feel safe, supported and able to make new friends throughout Freshers week and ongoing.

What are the wristbands?

One thing we know after the last year, is that everyone has different coping mechanisms when dealing with change. Moving into University life is a brand-new environment for you all and we want you to keep in mind that although you’re all experiencing the same shift, everyone will be coping with it differently.

So... these wee bands are for you to utilise in larger social gatherings and events that will be happening throughout Freshers Week (and ongoing in group social settings if you’d like). They will be a subtle indicator of HOW U are FEELING in that social space - we know sometimes it can be hard to vocalise your thoughts to people you don’t quite know yet!

What do the colours mean?

We've tried to keep it simple, with Red, Yellow and Green. Each colours means...

Red

"Hey, I’m nervous about socializing in these spaces again. I’m here to meet new people but would appreciate it if you could keep a fair distance. This would make me feel more comfortable making my way to a new normal."

Yellow

"Hey! I’m excited to be here but still adjusting to being around so many new people. I would really like to chat but at a small distance."

Green

"Hiya!! I am absolutely buzzing to be back out in social spaces and making new friends. Come over and chat!"
