When a Shark Suit Goes a Long Way

Hi, I’m Lil, VP for Student Communities at Heriot-Watt Student Union. My role is all about making students feel like they belong here whether that’s through societies, events, or spaces where people can be themselves. I first got involved with the Union through the Ocean Conservation Society, which I helped set up in my first year. Picture this: me, running around campus in a shark costume, convincing people to care about marine life. It worked. We won New Society of the Year, and I found a love for building communities that make a difference.

I moved to Edinburgh from Finland six years ago to study Marine Biology, following in the footsteps of my parents who had research collaborations with Heriot-Watt when they were my age. I’ve been fascinated by the ocean ever since I joined conservation excursions while living in Indonesia at 13. That experience shaped not just my studies, but also my passion for creating opportunities where people come together and make an impact.

My job now is simple: to help students find their people. Whether you’re into niche hobbies, cultural celebrations, or late-night board games, I want you to feel like there’s a place for you here. One of my favourite projects right now is transforming the Union into a real “third space”, not just a bar, or a study spot, but a proper hangout where you can feel at home.

The thing that motivates me most is seeing the spark in someone when their idea comes to life. I’ve been there myself when I set up my own event business, spending my savings to make it happen, and seeing my first event fill up with people. That’s why the Union’s value of empowering resonates most with me. I want every student to feel like they can take ownership of their ideas and shape their time here.

Outside of work, I’m all about creative expression. I’ve been involved in circus arts for years, managing performers, directing shows, and learning things like fire spinning and aerial arts. My flat is covered in mind maps of plans and ideas, and yes, I definitely own more stuff than I probably should.

And if you ever invite me to a fancy dress party, don’t be surprised if I show up in a shark suit. Some things never change.
