Let's say hello to...
The Importance of Saying Hello
Hi, I’m Nicola, you can call me Nickie , and I’m part of the Advice Hub team here at Heriot-Watt Student Union. You’ll usually find me at the front desk, I am the first person you see when you walk through the door. Whether you’re feeling lost, overwhelmed, or just need someone to talk to, I’m here to welcome you in, offer a listening ear, and help you find the support you need.
Originally from California, I moved to Edinburgh in 2021. Though Scotland has always felt like a second home. I studied my undergraduate degree here before heading back to the States, but it didn’t take long for me to realise that Edinburgh was where I wanted to be. During the pandemic, I applied for a master’s in counselling, and I’ve been here ever since.
Before joining Heriot-Watt, I worked as a programme assistant and transition specialist for a charity that helped returning students get back into education. That role taught me how powerful a warm welcome and practical guidance can be, so I’ve carried that with me into my work here.
My role is all about making students feel seen, heard, and supported. I open the Advice Hub doors, offer information, a safe space to talk, or direct you to one of our advisors. We see around 20 students a day during term, and every interaction matters. Beyond the front desk, I also help with campaigns and academic support. I am a strong advocate for academic integrity, which is something I care deeply about. Misconduct cases can be incredibly stressful, so I’ve worked on Gen AI campaigns and simple guides to help students avoid unintentional mistakes and feel more in control.
Of all our values, welcoming is the one that resonates most with me. It’s the start of everything, that first moment of empathy and openness that can make a student feel safe and supported. Sometimes it’s just a simple “take a seat and let’s chat” but that invitation can make all the difference.
Outside the office, I am also a relationship therapist and work at an indoor cycling facility. Most importantly, I am a sunshine enthusiast (bonus points if there’s a spicy margarita involved). And fun fact? I spent 20 years Irish dancing in California with a music band. Such a wild ride, but it definitely kept life interesting!
