Let's say hello to...

Jay, Student Engagement Coordinator (Academic)

Crown, Quill, and Student Thrill

Hi, I’m Jay, and I’ve just joined the Union as the Student Engagement Coordinator (Academic). My role is all about ensuring our academic reps and department officers across all levels feel confident and supported in what they do. Whether it's providing training, building relationships with academic staff, or working alongside your VP Academic to ensure students’ voices are heard, I’m here so that academic representation has a real impact (with plenty of Red Bull to keep me going!).

I’m originally from Bathgate, but I moved to Musselburgh to study drama at Queen Margaret University before settling in Edinburgh. I’ve always been drawn to the buzz of the city where there’s always something going on. During my time at QMU, I was a class rep for four years and ended up being bitten by the Student Union bug, going on to serve as the President for Academic Life. I loved every second of shaping the student experience and knew I wanted to keep doing this work long-term. That’s why this role at Heriot-Watt felt like the perfect next step for me, even if moving from an arts-focused campus to a STEM-heavy one was a bit of a culture shift!

One piece of work I’m particularly proud of was reviewing the extenuating circumstances process, making it easier for QMU students to apply for extensions. Removing barriers like that makes a huge difference, and that’s exactly the kind of change I want to keep driving here. For me, the Union’s student-focused value resonates deeply, it’s why we exist! At the same time, I believe fun and empowerment are just as crucial. Students deserve an experience that’s joyful and, ultimately, we advocate for them to be able to speak up and take control of their journey through higher education.

Outside of work, I love indulging in my passions. I collect Princess Diana memorabilia (my shelves are now practically a shrine) and am also endlessly fascinated by Mary, Queen of Scots. Both were absolute icons and fiercely strong in the face of adversity, and I take a lot of inspiration from them. Then there’s the stage, which is my true happy place. I thrive in front of an audience, with one of my favourite roles being Titania, Queen of the Fairies, in A Midsummer Night’s Dream, which was a real camp dream come true!
