Cooking Connections, Stirring Up Change

Hi, I’m Mayowa, a Business Analytics master’s student originally from Nigeria. Scotland has always fascinated me so when it came time to choose where to study, Edinburgh felt like the perfect fit. The stunning campus and the energy of the city drew me here. From the very first day, I knew I’d made the right choice. The Fringe sounded like a dream, the countryside gave me peace, and the community made me feel at home.

Before coming here, I studied for my undergraduate degree back home and went on to work as a project manager. I loved the career I was building, but I wanted to challenge myself further to give myself more opportunities. Taking part in programmes where students pitched groundbreaking ideas was a turning point, it showed me the power of ambition, and I realised I can always do better.

At Heriot-Watt, I see myself as someone who students can turn to not just for academic concerns, but for their wellbeing, too. I’m community-centred and proud to stand up for my people, especially fellow Nigerians and Black students. My role is about listening, gathering feedback, and working to make real changes that improve student life. Whether it’s presenting insights to Student Parliament or finding practical solutions to everyday challenges, I’m motivated by commitment and care. I want every student to feel the same sense of welcome and belonging that I felt when I first arrived.

One of the things I’m most proud of was during Covid, when schools were shut down. My team and I volunteered to provide free academic support for children over nine months. Seeing how those kids have gone on to achieve great things is something I’ll always carry with me. It reminds me why service matters.

Personally, the Union’s values of welcoming and fun sum up what student life should be. Academic work empowers us, but the student community is where we find joy and courage. That’s why I love being part of it, work and fun, hand in hand.

Outside of my studies, you’ll usually find me around music, yes, I am a karaoke fan! Cooking is another passion, I enjoy preparing big community meals, especially grilled chicken and rice, a favourite recipe from back home.

And although I come across as extroverted, I’ll let you in on a secret: deep down, I’m actually quite introverted.
