    Background Information:

Scottish Borders Rape Crisis Centre (SBRCC) provides emotional and practical support, information, and advocacy to hundreds of survivors of sexual violence every year. We offer a safe environment where survivors can talk freely and in confidence. Our support services are person-centered and survivor led. We stand alongside survivors, working at their pace, never putting pressure on them to disclose the details of their experience unless they choose to.

We are an all-women organisation, believing that this allows us to offer the most appropriate and secure support to women and young people affected by rape and other forms of sexual violence. Support can take the form of one to one (face-to-face) support sessions at the Centre or in safe outreach venues across the Scottish Borders, or telephone or virtual support if preferred.

Our support is person centred, holistic, inclusive, and accessible. The organisational culture and therefore, all its services and activities are aligned to and underpinned by the trauma informed principles of safety, choice, trust, empowerment, and collaboration.

Our services are aimed at enabling and supporting survivors to reclaim control of their lives and everything we do is aimed at empowering survivors. Support is focused on safety, self-care, and healthy emotional regulation. We offer a safe space for survivors to tell their story and start to recover from the sexual trauma they have experienced.

    Listening Volunteer

    Edinburgh Nightline

This opportunity is ongoing, with no end date.

Edinburgh Nightline is a confidential and non-judgemental support and information charity, run by students, for students. Our listening volunteers ensure every student has the opportunity to talk about their feelings in a safe, non-judgemental environment.

Edinburgh Nightline is run by student volunteers. All of our volunteers are supported by each other, and we’ve formed a great support network. All we need from our volunteers is enthusiasm and an understanding of our service, which you can find out more about through this page.

Are you able to listen but not judge?

Can you give information but not advice?

Can you spare a few nights every term to support other students?

Our volunteers are an integral part of our organisation and receive an extremely high level of initial and ongoing training, based around training delivered by other organisations such as the Samaritans. Student volunteers are responsible for taking calls and e-listenings, for fundraising, and for the general upkeep of the service.

The welfare of our volunteers is something we value greatly. Listening volunteers are provided with support throughout their role, with our dedicated welfare team available from when you first register your interest until your final duty.

Am I the right person for Nightline?

We are always looking for students who are able to listen with empathy without judging or trying to give advice. You must be able and willing to keep any involvement you have in Nightline a secret.

Our training sessions run once per semester and no experience is required – just enthusiasm for our cause. We ask that volunteers can attend specific training days, and are willing to commit to one duty every 2-3 weeks.

Note that volunteering is only available to 18+ students in an Edinburgh College/University.

We have a number of Pre-training Minorities Resources that we encourage prospective volunteers to look at.

If you have any unanswered questions about the application process, email us at training@ednightline.com.
