WHO WE ARE

We are a vibrant and dynamic student union representing over 10,000 students at Heriot-Watt University. We operate multiple commercial outlets including a shop, bar, and coffee shop, and deliver a wide range of student-focused services and events, from freshers’ activities to large-scale festivals.

Our mission is to enhance student wellbeing and success. Our charitable activity generates around £3M annually in revenue, which we reinvest to improve our student services.

Our strategy, the Big Plan, guides our development and transformation. As part of our ongoing journey, we’re looking to strengthen our Trustee Board with someone who brings governance experience and insight, ideally with experience in trading or student-focused environments, though this is not essential.

OUR TRUSTEE BOARD

Our high-performing Board includes:

  • Elected student officers (President and Vice Presidents)
  • Student trustees (undergraduate and postgraduate)
  • External trustees with backgrounds including finance, charity, HR, education, and the private sector
  • A university-nominated trustee

All trustees provide the Union with oversight, strategic guidance, and ensure we remain financially sustainable, legally compliant, and aligned with student needs.

WHO ARE WE LOOKING FOR?

We welcome applications from individuals with experience in governance, strategy, student services, or wellbeing. We’re particularly interested in hearing from those with backgrounds such as:

  • Retail, hospitality, trading operations, or other areas that support organisational growth and student experience
  • SME commercial leadership
  • Student engagement and wellbeing
  • Third sector or charitable organisations
  • Business development and strategic planning

Experience of chairing committees or boards would be an asset, and we’re especially keen to hear from applicants who may be interested in developing into a future Chair of the Board.

WHAT YOU’LL DO

As a Trustee, you will:

  • Provide strategic oversight and governance across all Union activities
  • Contribute to long-term planning and development through the Big Plan
  • Offer insight into improving performance, student services, or organisational growth
  • Champion the Union’s values and contribute to a culture of inclusion and continuous improvement
  • Support the Union’s mission to enhance student wellbeing and success

This is a non-executive role focused on governance, not operational management.

TIME COMMITMENT

The Trustee Board meets approximately four times a year in the evening (usually 5:30–7:30 pm).
You’ll receive papers a week in advance.
Additional meetings may be held for specific projects or reviews. You may also have the opportunity to join a sub-committee.

Term

The position is for a maximum of two, 4-year terms.

WHAT HAPPENS AT A TRUSTEE BOARD MEETING?

You’ll review reports on financial performance, strategic initiatives, and operational updates.
Meetings may include planning, performance review, and decision-making on new projects, with some confidential items discussed in camera.

WHAT DO YOU GAIN FROM BEING A TRUSTEE?

Joining our Board is an excellent opportunity to develop skills in:

  • Governance and strategic planning
  • Financial oversight and risk management
  • Leadership and stakeholder engagement
  • Legal and compliance understanding
  • Higher education and student priorities

You’ll be part of a collaborative and diverse group of professionals committed to student success and innovation.

Ready to make a meaningful impact? We’d love to hear from you!
