Let's say hello to...
Knitting Change into the Academic Experience
Hi! I’m Heather, and I support everything academic here at Heriot-Watt Student Union. If you’re stepping into university life and wondering who’s got your back when it comes to your studies, that’s where I come in.
I’m the one behind the scenes recruiting, training, and supporting all our academic reps. I’m their go-to person, making sure they’ve got the tools, confidence, and voice to help shape your learning experience. I also work closely with our Vice President Academic on bigger campaigns and projects to make sure your education is the best it can be.
I have always been involved in academic life, so, when the opportunity came up to move to Edinburgh and join a Union that really lives its values, I jumped at it. That was two years ago, and I’ve never looked back. Students come to university for their degree and if something’s not right with their learning or teaching, it can affect everything. That’s why this work matters to me. If we can help even one student feel more supported through their learning process, that’s a win.
Every day in my role is different. One day I might be involved in running skill development sessions to help reps build their confidence and boost employability. The next, I’m attending meetings to raise student concerns, or brainstorming campaigns that will make a lasting difference. One of the things I’m most proud of is running the Oscars for the second year in a row. The first time was great but the second time, we nailed it and everything fell into place.
I resonate with all Union values but empowering has a special place. There’s nothing better than watching a student grow to be confident and knowledgeable. One of our department officers this year completely transformed during their time with us. Helping them reach that point is what it’s all about.
Outside of work, you’ll usually find me knitting, I’ve finished two sweaters, a bunch of socks, and I’m currently working on a blanket. I’m also slightly (okay, massively) into the Highland band Tide Lines, I’ll be seeing them five times this year and I’m very okay with that. And my fun fact? Despite the blonde hair, I am a brunette at heart, and it was my dad who taught me all the tricks to take care of my locks!
