Jump Start

This society is part of the Jump Start Scheme.

Sometimes a society that has existed in previous years doesn't continue on into the new year for whatever reason, often because the people who run it graduate. This means that sometimes a society is ready to go, but missing a crucial part of what's needed to make it tick, that could be you! With our jump start a society programme, you can become a society leader and pick up where the society left off! If you're interested in adopting this society, please contact the Societies Team for more information! Otherwise, if you'd be interested in joining the society, please sign up so we know which societies have the highest level of interest and where we can offer the most support!

Welcome to the Heriot-Watt University Scottish Dance Society: a friendly, inclusive community bringing people together to learn, enjoy and carry forward Scotland’s dance traditions.

Our current programme focuses on Scottish Country Dancing, a lively and social style danced in groups to jigs, reels and strathspeys. Whether you are completely new, remember dancing at school, enjoy the occasional ceilidh or have years of experience, you’ll find a warm welcome here. You do not need to bring a partner, wear special clothing or have a Scottish background.

Through our classes and events, you can build your confidence, stay active, meet new people and connect with Scottish culture and the wider dance community. We want to create a space where everyone can learn at their own pace, return after time away and simply enjoy dancing together.

We are beginning with Scottish Country Dance. As the society grows and interest develops, we plan to expand our programme to include other Scottish dance traditions, including Highland and Scottish step dancing.

Become a member, come along to a class or join us at one of our events. Your first class is free, so there is no reason not to give it a go!
