The High Performance Computing (HPC) Society brings together students interested in high-performance computing, supercomputing, parallel programming, GPUs, scientific computing.

Sometimes a society that has existed in previous years doesn't continue on into the new year for whatever reason, often because the people who run it graduate. This means that sometimes a society is ready to go, but missing a crucial part of what's needed to make it tick, that could be you! With our jump start a society programme, you can become a society leader and pick up where the society left off! This is a brand new society - and we need members!.

This society is brand new, and in order to become an official society it needs a minimum of 10 members before it can start.

We will run practical workshops to help members develop real HPC skills, including preparation for the ARCHER2 Driving Test and ARCHER2 GPU Driving Test. Successfully completing the ARCHER2 Driving Test can allow eligible new users to obtain an ARCHER2 account with an 800 Compute Unit (CU) allocation for up to 12 months, giving you hands-on experience running jobs on one of the UK's national supercomputers. The GPU route provides access to ARCHER2's GPU development platform, with a minimal allocation for running GPU jobs.
We will also give members the opportunity to compete in CIUK 2026's Student Cluster Challenge. CIUK (Computing Insight UK) is one of the UK's major HPC events, bringing together researchers, industry and HPC professionals. Its Student Cluster Challenge gives university teams the chance to tackle practical HPC problems, optimise applications and work with real computing hardware and software. For 2026, teams will compete through online challenges before the qualifying teams take part in an in-person final at Manchester Central.
Beyond CIUK, we aim to build teams for other national and international HPC competitions, while providing workshops, technical projects and opportunities to gain practical experience with supercomputing.
Whether you're completely new to HPC or already interested in supercomputing, GPUs and parallel computing, the society is a place to learn, build and compete.
