🎬 Welcome to Uni Alone, our new series where Kevin is all grown up and facing the ultimate challenge: surviving uni!
All is well, and freedom tastes amazing… until you realise you’ve blown your budget and microwaveable mac and cheese is your new best friend. 😱
So here are a few tips to help you stay on track and still afford that Little Nero’s pizza every now and then!
💸 Bills without the Awkwardness:
Don’t be shy to ask for your money back and use apps like Splitwise or Monzo to split bills with your flatmates so that no one owes anyone £3.47 in electricity!
Pro tip: Monzo and Revolut are great for international students too!
🛒 Shop Once, Cry Once:
Plan your meals before shopping so you’re not panic-buying pesto at midnight. The hardest life lesson? Never go to the supermarket when you're hungry!
Aldi and Lidl are your cheapest supermarkets, and don’t forget to use cards like Lidl Plus or Tesco Clubcard to save a bit extra.
The Union Shop also has the cheapest meal deal, yes, even cheaper than Tesco! Plus, apps like Too Good To Go are perfect for snagging treats without the guilt.
Don’t forget student discounts where you can, a cheeky bit off always helps.
🥘 Batch Like a Boss:
Meal prep if you can! Cook once, portion into tubs, and voilà, meals sorted for days.
Rice, couscous, pasta, big salads with different proteins and you’re sorted.
🚌 Bus Smart:
Grab a Ridacard for discounted fares your wallet (and your legs) will thank you.
With a Ridacard you can travel on all Lothian buses (and trams!) including both day and night services across Edinburgh, Queensferry and Edinburgh Airport.
