If you live in Scotland and are under 22 years old, you are eligible for a card giving you free bus travel from 31 January 2022! Applications open from the 10th of January 2022.

Where can I travel?

This scheme will give you free travel on any bus in any part of Scotland on registered bus services. Only a few services, such as premium-fare night buses and City Sightseeing buses, may not accept the card. If you are unsure, contact the bus company before your travel. Make sure you follow the current COVID guidelines enforced when travelling to keep everyone and yourself safe. Once you recieve your card, make sure to have it on you whenever you want to take the bus otherwise you’ll have to pay for your trip.

How to apply?

You can apply online at GETYOURNEC.SCOT. Before starting the application process, download or look out the documents as outlined on GETYOURNEC.SCOT which you will need for your application. These documents may include proof of ID and address within Scotland. You can apply using a smartphone, tablet or laptop. Make sure you either have scanned copies of your document or a camera on the device to take pictures of your documents during the application process.

If you cannot apply online, you can apply in-person at your local council. Though, due to the ongoing pademic, some councils may be operating online. Please check their website or call before visiting.

When will I hear back?

Allow up to ten working days from the date your application was approved for your card to arrive. They have asked to please be patient as the current situation with the pandemic means that it might take longer to process applications.

Useful contacts -

If you need help applying for your NEC card, you can get help online at GETYOURNEC.SCOT or contact your local council. For more information on this scheme, visit https://www.transport.gov.scot/concessionary-travel/young-persons-free-bus-travel-scheme/

NOTE: Currently the Scottish Government is encouraging people to stay at home as much as possible - until the situation with the pandemic improves. They are asking that only those with an essential need to travel by bus apply at this time, such as for work, education, health or care reasons.
