WHAT’S THE JOB?

We are looking for an exciting and passionate individual to join our team working in our Student Shop. The main parts of the role are:

  • Serving customers on tills and being the face of the Student Union to our students and staff on campus
  • Being in charge of our self-service tills making sure it’s a quick experience for those in a rush
  • Managing stock replenishment and standards on the shop floor, this can be cleaning a section (like our sweet section) or creating amazing displays in our clothing and gifts section.
  • Taking in deliveries and checking them off to make sure everything we ordered is correct

Ideally we’re looking for someone who can fit in to our team and be confident in delivering amazing customer service whilst being the face of the Union brand, someone who enjoys the challenge of trying new things.

This is a part time job during University term-time only – working 25 hours per week, usually Monday – Friday, 8am – 1pm, although flexibility is expected depending on what we have going on so some evening and weekend work may be required with plenty of notice.

WHO ARE WE?

We are Heriot-Watt University Student Union - an independent charity that is run by and for students. While we are a charity we also run trading services (food & drink venues and shop) that aim to make a surplus. We use this surplus to invest in other vital student support services such as advice & support and volunteering.

Ultimately our main goal is to make sure that Heriot-Watt students have THE BEST TIME whilst studying here. Our purpose is clear and simple – to put Students First, Always. We live by five values – we are fun, welcoming, brave, empowering and student focussed.

You’ll join a friendly, hardworking and professional team and have a real opportunity to make a difference to our members – while having some fun along the way.

WHAT DO YOU GET?

You will be paid up to £9,700 per year working term-time only. Pension available plus you’ll get that warm fuzzy feeling inside that you’re helping the students of HW make the most of their Student Union.

WHAT WOULD A TYPICAL DAY LOOK LIKE?

  • You start your day by signing in so we know you are on shift (don’t worry all you have to do is tap your name on a tablet in the staff room and clock in, don’t forget to clock out at the end of the day too though)
  • You will then speak to the Team Leader in charge who will allocate you a task, such as jumping on the tills to let someone else off who has been on for a while. Once on the tills you will sign on using your log on number and you’re good to go. Now the fun part of helping our customers. We like to serve people quickly as many will be on a lunch break, but during the quieter times many will like a wee chat with you and it’s a good way to find out what is happening around the campus.
  • Now you have been on tills for a little while the Team Leader will give you another job to let you off for a bit, so it might be to replenish the juice section (this needs filled up a lot during the day). You might be asked to help take in a delivery and check it off to make sure all the stock arriving matches the delivery note, then you will need to work the stock to make sure the shop floor is filled up with lots of products for our customers.
  • Now that the delivery is finished with it is time to check that the Costa Express machine has plenty of milk and coffee beans before the midday rush, don’t forget to make sure there are cups and cup lids too.
  • There is a mid-morning rush so you are now covering the self service tills whilst others are on the main tills. This is a fun job as you get a chance to chat to people and make sure they have no issues scanning their products through.
  • The time is flying in and its almost the end of your shift you only have 15 minutes left. You ask the Team Leader what you can help with for the last 15 minutes and they ask you to go and face up the grocery aisle so it looks neat and tidy - don’t forget those out of stock stickers for any missing lines so we can clearly see that we need to order more stock of!
  • Phew, another great day over. You head to the staff room to sign out and grab your stuff before heading off for the day.

IS THIS JOB FOR YOU?

if you answer yes to these questions, then this job might suit you perfectly!

  • Do you get excited serving customers and giving outstanding service?
  • Do you enjoy working in a busy fast paced environment?
  • Do you enjoy working as part of a team?
  • Can you think on your feet and find a perfect solution to someone’s enquiry?
  • Does working with a range of different people from different countries, backgrounds and cultures sound appealing?
  • Does working pro-actively, rather than reactively, come naturally to you?
  • Do you work well under pressure, delivering to deadlines and then going the extra mile?

This role probably isn't best suited to an existing student, due to the hours and shifts required.

If you’re not yet sure and want to have an informal chat about the job please contact Stewart Macdonald-O’Brien, Store Manager at stewart.macdonald@hw.ac.uk.
