What is the Black Voices Project?

The Black Voices Project aims to showcase our Black students, staff and alumni, address misconceptions about Black history, and empower our Black members to excel both inside and outside of the classroom through a range of workshops, panel discussions and other events and initiatives.

What’s the job?

We’re looking for 4 enthusiastic students to join us this academic year help us work on an exciting project, tackling the Black Attainment Gap. The role will work with the Student Union and University to represent the views of BME students. The role will play a vital part in delivering the initial objectives of the Black Voices Project.

The job is part-time, approximately 6-8 hours per week (we will try to work around your studies, but you should expect hours to be at a time to suit students and university staff). We particularly welcome applications from students with a BME background.

The four roles on offer are:

  • Communications Coordinator x2
  • Student Research Coordinator x1
  • Events Coordinator x1

Each of the above roles will contribute through these remits to make a real difference to the experience of our BME students.

Who are we?

We are Heriot-Watt University Student Union. We’re based in Edinburgh with campuses in Orkney and the Scottish Borders. Our main goal is to make sure that Heriot-Watt students have THE BEST TIME whilst studying here. We have our commercial outlets as well as Advice Hub, academic representation, societies and community, plus we work with Students to make their experience at Heriot-Watt the best it can be.

Student experience is a key priority for us. This year, we have secured funding to address the important issue of BME student attainment. The BME attainment gap refers to the growing problem where students from BME backgrounds are less likely than their white peers to get first or upper second-class degrees. We are working with the University to tackle this challenge.

What do you get?

The role pays a stipend of £700. You will be fully supported in the role, helping to improve the student experience for our BME community, to permanently change it for the better.

You will also gain invaluable experience of assisting with running events and communicating with a range of stakeholders.
