1. WHAT WOULD YOU BRING TO THE ROLE?

Hi, I am Scott, a final year Accounting and Finance student. The last two years have been difficult for everyone, but I believe it has given this role the opportunity to make a greater difference than it has in years prior. Throughout my time at University, I have held an array of both voluntary and paid positions within the Union:

  • Society Founder in my First Year
  • Member of Charities Committee
  • School MP for SoSS
  • Duty Manager of the Union's Bar

These positions have given me a valuable insight into what the Union does both successfully, and what it can improve on. I believe it shows my consistent committment to the Student Union and bettering the student experience.

2. WHAT THREE THINGS SHOULD THE VP COMMUNITY ACT ON IN THE NEXT ACADEMIC YEAR?

1. Rebuild Community
2. Student Housing Rights
3. Greener Sustainability Portfolio

3. WHAT SPECIFIC AIMS AND GOALS DO YOU HAVE FOR ENHANCING THE STUDENT EXPERIENCE?

REBUILD COMMUNITIES POST COVID:

  • Re-building of communities within the Union by having more frequent diverse events on all three campuses.
  • Establish social spaces dedicated to the Postgraduate Students as well as organise specific tailored events.
  • Increase funding and support for societies, with a dedicated fund for academic societies.

STUDENT HOUSING:

  • Challenge Union endorsements of PBSA's.
  • Work with external tenants rights charitites to help the Union provide more comprehensive resources for students living in private accommodation.
  • Work with NUS Scotland to lobby the government for greater support for students in the cost-of-living crisis.

IMPROVE SUSTAINABILITY STRATEGY:

  • Develop a sustainability strategy for the Student Union, including investigating our route to net-zero.
  • Launch a guest lecture series, highlighting the importance of the climate-crisis and informative ways we can make positive changes.
  • Lobby the University for a greener investment portfolio.
