Where there's a WILL, there's a way!

1. WHAT WOULD YOU BRING TO THE ROLE?

Hi!! I'm Will. To me, an important part of being at Heriot-Watt is the Student Union which I have been hugely involved with.

  • From the end of my first year to the beginning of my fourth, I was President of the Eco Society.
  • For a year or so I have taken a lead role in managing the gardening allotments on campus.
  • I have worked closely alongside the current and previous VPCs and have been part of the Sustainability Working Group and Student Life Group.
  • I am a member of and have been to many events from different societies such as Ocean Conservation Society's beach cleans.

This comes from my passion for the environment and nature which I will bring to this role.

I am also currently the Social Secretary of the Badminton club. From this, as well as being part of societies and society committees, I have had a lot of experience planning events and socials as well as listening to student voices.

2. WHAT THREE THINGS SHOULD THE VP COMMUNITY ACT ON IN THE NEXT ACADEMIC YEAR?

I Will...

        1.  Keep managing the gardening allotments so students can keep growing plants.

I Will...

        2.  Push to make a better environmental impact in the university and the student union.

I Will...

        3.  Run a range of cultural events such as Open Mics, Karaokes, Ceilidhs and Mahjong.

3. WHAT SPECIFIC AIMS AND GOALS DO YOU HAVE FOR ENHANCING THE STUDENT EXPERIENCE?

Gardening:

  • Who doesn't love FREE food with ZERO food miles? Gardening is open to anyone at any time of year and the result is some delicious fruit and veg for your dinner.
  • Many people have contributed to tidying up and planting things in the veg patch which has been a great success. I am currently the only person managing the allotments so to keep that space maintained for growing lots of plants, vote Will #1 for YOUR Student Union Vice President Community!
  • I will also organise tree planting and bulb planting sessions at certain times of the year.

Sustainability:

  • I will run an Eco Month, as a step up from a Sustainability Week, to allow more events to run and for students to get involved with more of them while also working around their schedules.
  • More vegan and other dietary requirements on all the food outlets on campus, with better allergen information on the menus themselves.
  • Push to keep plant-based milks the same price or even cheaper in the coffee outlets.
  • Get more water fountains and microwaves and make sure they are all always available to use.
  • Provide more education for recycling on campus and in Edinburgh, especially for new students.
  • Push Lothian to make the next lot of electric buses be on at least one of the routes that go to and from Heriot-Watt campus.

Events:

  • Open Mic nights, Karaokes and Ceilidhs at the Student Union.
  • Making sure Freshers and international students feel welcome and at home and make their time at Heriot-Watt more meaningful as well as manageable. I will continue to run events to celebrate different nationalities and cultures such as Global Day and potlucks.
  • Themed game nights such as Mahjong.
  • I will support societies throughout the year and through tough times such as this pandemic, helping them get more engagement by encouraging students to be more involved with them and attend more of their events.
  • I will also make it easier for societies to contact representatives in the Orkney and Scottish Borders campuses.

Long term goal:

  • One of my long-term goals will be to try to make the beginning-of-the-year period easier for society leaders. Freshers' Week is also week 0 so is doubly demanding for the higher year students who have to juggle between normal studying and event organising.

This will be the most difficult goal to achieve. Big changes and potential obstacles such as a shift in staff work schedules could prove to be a challenge. BUT, where there's a will... There is always a way. And no matter how much pushback I may get, all I need is a bit of Will power.

So, Vote Will #1 for YOUR VPC and we WILL make a difference.

Because

Where there's a Will, there's a way!
