Vote Sanjit, vote for the best year ever!

1. WHAT WOULD YOU BRING TO THE ROLE?

Hey everyone, my name is J K Sanjit and I’m currently an Actuarial Science postgraduate student. I’ve loved every part of my university life since I started at Heriot Watt almost four years ago and I’d never imagined that someday I would be standing for President of the Union. Getting our university years stuck in the middle of a pandemic wasn't what we all expected but it was what happened and I have seen the Union and the university still push through inspite of setbacks to give students the support that they needed in order to tackle their studies and other activities. As we start to transition out of the pandemic, I want to focus all my efforts into making sure that each and every student gets the absolute best out of their university experience. Having been a part of the university for almost four years, I've had the opportunity to speak to a vast majority of people regarding the issues that they have been facing and any things that could be done differently. I've also been a student MP and this really broadened my horizon on the different issues and also let me work on some of them. And so I really believe my experience can help me further your ideas and the changes that you want to bring to the university.

2. WHAT THREE THINGS SHOULD THE PRESIDENT ACT ON IN THE NEXT ACADEMIC YEAR?

  • Improve Employability opportunities
  • Tackle housing crisis
  • Support marginalised students

3. WHAT SPECIFIC AIMS AND GOALS DO YOU HAVE FOR ENHANCING THE STUDENT EXPERIENCE?

If I am elected President, these are some of the goals I aim to achieve;

  • Work closely with careers service in order to improve existing opportunities for students and help them with CV and interview preparations; Host career fairs and also try to bring in industry speakers to hold talks to speak about their experiences.
  • Work with the watt club to get alumni to also hold events that could help students understand their experience,
  • Introduce leadership pathways for academic reps and students in order to showcase their work throughout university and help them get it on linkedIn for employers to notice,
  • Create physical spaces to support students with start ups and side hustles,
  • Lobby the university with regards to the current housing crisis and try to take measures that could help with rent control in various accomodations,
  • Continue on the current path with the Black voices project and help it grow to newer heights; and also help increase community representation for the wider BAME category and LGBTQ+ and Disabled students,
  • Work to further enhance PGT and PGR experience.
  • Ensure greater transparency on union updates so that you always know what we are working on.

4. WHERE CAN I FIND OUT MORE ABOUT YOUR CAMPAIGN?

If you want to know more about the things I've listed in my manifesto, you can pop me an email at sj53@hw.ac.uk and I'll be more than happy to answer any of your questions.
