Bar Staff

Job Description: Commercial Staff will work as a team member to assist the management in achieving and exceeding customer expectations for all Commercial operations in line with the Vision & Values. The post holder will be trained to be multi-skilled in all general areas of the Commercial Operations and work as directed, in accordance with Commercial Operations, to ensure that all key targets and service quality standards set are implemented in order to develop trade levels to maximum potential

Reporting to: Commercial Manager

Functional Relationships: Students, Student Union, University Staff Members, Visitors and Suppliers

Principal Duties of Post

  • Have excellent customer service skills
  • Prepare and serve drinks to required standard and in line with Health & Safety standards and legislation
  • Conform to all commercial operational procedures and make recommendations for change when appropriate
  • Contribute as a team member to ideas in relation to operational efficiency and service standards and make recommendations
  • Carry out any cleaning as directed front and back of house to a high standard
  • Till operation and cash handling
  • Attend all relevant training 
  • Assist in promotions
  • Assist in relevant key events throughout the year
  • Work with all team members in a fair and respectful manner in accordance with legislation and SU Policy and Procedures.
  • To ensure all activities are carried out in accordance with ethically and environmentally policies of the Union.
  • Any other duties, as may be reasonably required, from time to time
  • Compliance with current regulations and legislation relevant to the post.

These duties are a guide to the work that the post holder will initially be required to undertake. Other duties or a change of duties may be necessary from time to time. The duties do not form part of the contract of employment. It is important to know that you will be expected to participate in any training programme considered relevant to your job and that you will be appraised during the course of your work. Staff are expected to portray a positive image, both internally and externally of the Student Union by displaying high standards of service, integrity, punctuality, politeness and professionalism.

Previous bar experience



Experience and understanding of the needs of Students



Alcohol Awareness Certificate
Food hygiene certificate



Achieving Excellence
Ability to continually deliver customer service beyond the expectations of customers and stakeholders




  • Ability to take responsibility for completion of essential training in connection with the position.
  • Ability to report back on training experience in order to assist the management team with review and evaluation

Financial & Operational Management
